Overview
This guide configures a cross-sell step that appears during checkout, before the customer pays, promoting products or a category of products you choose. You create one cross-sell rule in Rule Manager, choose whether it shows specific products (an Upsell Product rule) or a whole category (an Upsell Category rule), and set its Upsell Type to checkout. The procedure happens entirely in Rule Manager, performed by one operator.

Prerequisites
Before you start, make sure the following are in place:
- Navigator access — the operator needs access to the relevant Navigator app; see Managing access to Navigator applications.
- Rule Manager — the cross-sell rule is created in Rule Manager. For what each field does, see the Rule Manager feature article.
- Enabled products — the products or category you want to promote must already be published with separate enable rules. Upsell rules do not enable products; see Rule Manager.
Steps
A cross-sell step at checkout is configured with a single cross-sell rule whose Upsell Type is set to checkout. For what each field below does, see the Rule Manager feature article.
- In Navigator, open Rule Manager and click Add Rule +.
- Click Select Rule Type, then choose Upsell Product to promote specific products or Upsell Category to promote a category of products, and click Continue.
- In Name, enter a name that identifies the rule, and leave Index at its default unless this rule must override another rule.
- Set Publish start and Publish stop to the period the cross-sell step should run. Use Schedule start/stop and Schedule days if it should run only at certain times or on certain days.
- Set Countries, Order Classes, and Stores to control where the cross-sell applies, then set Categories and Products to control which menu items the rule applies to.
- If you created an Upsell Product rule, in Upsell Products select the products to display in the cross-sell step.
- If you created an Upsell Category rule, in Upsell Categories select the category whose products display in the cross-sell step.
- Set Upsell Type to checkout so the cross-sell step appears during checkout, before the customer pays.

- Set Max Limit and Limitation Group to cap how many cross-sell products a customer can add; set Max Limit to 0 for no limit.
- Set Basket Filter to matches or all to hide cross-sell products already in the Basket, or leave it at none to always show them.
- If you run more than one cross-sell step, set Page Index to order them; steps with the same index appear on the same cross-sell step.
- Click Save.
Additional Options
These are optional and not required for the cross-sell step to work:
- Run a second cross-sell step when a product is added — create a sibling rule with Upsell Type set to productAdd; see the Related Articles section.
- Build smarter, non-repeating steps — use Basket Filter to hide items already in the Basket, so each cross-sell step only promotes products the customer has not yet added. See Rule Manager.
- Combine several rules on one step — give multiple cross-sell rules the same Page Index to display them together. See Rule Manager.
- Show cross-sell steps in sequence — create a new cross-sell rule with a higher Page Index so its step appears after the previous one; each higher index adds a further cross-sell step that the customer sees in turn. See Rule Manager.
Expected Outcome
A cross-sell step now appears during checkout, before the customer pays, showing the products or category you selected. The step respects the Max Limit, Limitation Group, Basket Filter, and Page Index settings configured on the rule.
Verify the Configuration
Confirm the cross-sell step works by placing a test order in the Frontend:
- In the Frontend, add a qualifying product to the Basket using an Order Class and store the rule targets, within the rule’s Publish start/stop window.
- Proceed to checkout and confirm the cross-sell step appears before the payment step, showing the products or category you selected.
- If the step does not appear, check the Troubleshooting section below.
Known Limitations
- Upsell rules do not enable products. The products or category promoted in a cross-sell step must already be published with separate enable rules.
- No category is activated when Categories is set to All and combined with specific products in the targeting fields.
- The Basket Filter only affects products already in the Basket; only products that have not been added to the Basket display in the cross-sell step.
Note: This list reflects the limitations identified as of 2026-06-29. Additional limitations may exist that have not yet been identified.
Troubleshooting
The most common reason a checkout cross-sell step does not appear is that the rule is outside its active window or the promoted items are not enabled. Confirm the current time is within Publish start/stop and the Schedule settings, confirm Upsell Type is set to checkout, and confirm the promoted products are published with their own enable rules. For field-level detail, see the Rule Manager feature article.
